Tombstone Tuesday-Former Slave receives a new headstone
Cecilia Ann White Petteway's new grave marker
recently purchased by her grandson, Odell Petteway of Richlands, N.C.
[Her original headstone was damaged beyond repair by hunters]
Celia was the wife of George Washington Petteway. Both were Former Slaves near Richlands, North Carolina
The Petteway Family cemetery
The largest all African American family cemetery within Onslow County, North Carolina.
Est. ca.1880.
This cemetery, along with many others, is slowly being encroached by "urban sprawl."
The Petteway Cemetery is, however, being protected
by direct descendants of Cecilia and George Washington and
by the land developer that controls the property that surrounds the cemetery.

I love these types of stories. My family just purchased a tombstone for a free-colored born in 1838 in NC. He was buried in Kansas. Hopefully this will be contagious.
