Wordless Wednesday- Edney chapel school house. est.ca.1872

The is the remaining all African American school house from the 19th Century, still standing on original site, left within Onslow County, North Carolina.

Established ca.1872, it remained in operation until 1957, when National laws governing education rights were changed; causing the need for the Edney school to end.

Odell Petteway, grandson of founder of school & church, is the current caretaker of this old school house.

Hello Sanjay,

Yes, the Edney school is in pretty good condition. A 1960 era hurricane dystroyed a small back room of the school.

Odell, at the time of the hurricane, took further steps to protect the school's condition. He placed newer siding and metal roof, over the original struction. Making a type of "second" layer over the school's structure.

In, 2009, the Petteway family purchased new windows. Now the school's interior can be kept safe and dry.

Proves, once again, how much exploring I can do in my home state. Thanks for sharing. It reminds me of the one room school that my mother attended and which was still around during my early years.
